This Year's Model Updates:

The Grand Cherokee is all new for 2005. Among the improvements are new four-wheel-drive systems, an independent front suspension, three excellent engine options and better ergonomics and build quality.

Pros:
  • Strong engine lineup, unmatched off-road ability, balanced handling, long list of advanced safety equipment, solid warranty.
Cons:
  • Hard plastic interior surfaces could use some padding, less cargo capacity than most midsize SUVs.

  • Good reliable SUV - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought the car in 2006 with 18,000 miles on it. It now has 95,000. I have not had any mechanical problems. This SUV is one of the smoothest riding vehicles I have been in. Power is good and it is holding up well to the wear and tear. No visible rust. Gas mileage is poor at best. I had been getting between 17-16 mpg around town and 18-19 on the hwy. However, now I am below 13mpg. It may be caused by the lack of driving. I have a company car now so it only gets short trips here and there. Also it tows very well. I pull a boat on occasion and can hardley tell it is behind me. I would recommend this car to friends. To

  • Air Problems - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Florida is not where you would normally roll your windows down in July, but dont! It hurts your ears, just like a lousy airplane cabin. I took it to the dealership. They test drove (I thought one of my back tires was bad); the mechanic said it was a poor design -- wind tunnel tested with window up only, not down. With the back seat windows down there is no place for the air to go, it is absolutely horrible!

Have been driving the 3.7 version for almost two years. Towed a fully loaded 5x8 enclosed trailer weighing 2000 lbs across the country with no problems in the mountains. Turn radius in parking lot is similar to small car. Power steering works great when at full stop. Spark plugs are difficult to replace, but not impossible. Climate control is quick to respond.

Dont get me wrong, I absolutely adore my Jeep. I love how it drives, looks, and all the features. It has been my favorite car so far, BUT it has SO many problems!! The sunroof leaks, the dust cover around the shifter broke, windshield washer fluid squirter broke off, the button to open the back hatch glass broke, and it sounds like the transmission is having problems!! for only being 4 years old I had assumed i bought a lemon! Also it seems that there is hardly any room in the back seat.

  • I Love Jeeps... BUT! - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have had this JGC for 10 months. Within that time I have had to send it in for 2 major repairs. This car has already cost me $1,700 to fix and according to the mechanic, who just replaced my starter, servos and battery, I will be needing a new Water Pump soon. Thats another $600 fix. In addition to the mechanical fixes there are several issues that I have let slide, including burnt out LEDs in the dash ($150 to repair), window motor broken, AC not getting cold, and door lock getting stuck. This Jeep has been a NIGHTMARE. Ive owned 4 jeeps and will probably never buy another one again.

I bought a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 4.7L engine in February of 2009. It had odd electrical issues - the message center would constantly tell me to "service the 4WD system" but I never used the 4X4 and the rear passenger side window wouldnt roll up after being rolled down. And the car got terrible gas mileage! My previous Jeep, a 1999 model had gotten great mileage and I never had problems with it. It was a great car! Then my boyfriend totaled my 05 Jeep. To replace it, I decided on an 05 Limited with the 5.7 (Hemi). And this new one stinks too! Gas mileage is even worse, and the passenger side window wont roll up. Plus, the car leaks when it rains. I used to love JEEP!

  • TERRIBLE NEVER BUYING ANOTHER - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought my 05 Jeep Grand cherokee in June of 2008 and have had nothing but problems since day one. Right away the starter went and then from there on the list is endless now the rear end is leaking the car only has 54,000 miles on it and its sitting in a driveway because within the past 3 weeks it has cost me over $2,000 in repairs. love my jeep but it is really getting ridiculous. I am looking into trading it in for a brand new honda, no more jeeps even though I have loved them my whole life. I guess its just the luck of the draw some people have good luck others do not.

I bought a 05 Grand Cherokee after driving a 04 4Runner Sport v8. I have to say that I like the options that you can get on the Laredo. The auto stick was the best thing that ever happened to the SUV buyers. It does wonderful on and off road and awesome when needing to pick up speed. And comes in very handy when driving in snowy weather. Gives you control of your SUV. I have never had problems with the engine light, but then I never let my gas run down to the reserve. Anyone knows that if you do that and it gets lower - the light will come on. Had an adjustment for the transmission in shop once - it needed a supplement fluid put in transmission for the auto stick use. I have never had any problems since.

  • More time at dealer then home - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

First time Jeep owner, mpg city 10, mpg hwy 20. Big problems with trans. When its cold trys to take off in second then shifts hard in to first. Problems going into rev at times, goes in false neutral when stopping sometimes. Trans whines after it warms up. ABS actives when stopping uphill almost every day. I live on a hill. Problem with check engine light comes on and off. Dealer has no clue. What a suprise! I like the way the ext and int looks. For the most part it runs great, never no problems with the motor. I do all my own maintence so I havent found any leaks. Two times a year I take it to the Nevada desert and bomb through the sand no problems at all. From CA to NV avg 22mpg.

  • Big hit on depreciation - $15,000 1 year - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Good ride over 2004. Think Edmunds is wrong about the back seat being cramped - its better then 2004 and adequate. They all should still have the 4x4 high and low - not just on demand 4x4. Without the high/low command track its not really a Jeep just a 4 wheel drive with limited off road ability. The rear cargo area height is lousy, my dogs can stand but rub the head liner in this Jeep, in the other version they could stand and not rub the headliner and I had better visibility. The dogs are 26 and 28 inches tall on all fours. I AM NOT GOING TO KEEP THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE THE TRADE IN VALUE HAS DEPRECIATED over $15,000 in one year; the vehicle is loaded listed for $34,400 and its value is $16K.
